Wavestone has acquired French AI and data consultancy AI Builders while cutting its 2026/27 financial targets, giving the market a more sober view of how quickly AI demand is reshaping European consulting.
The Paris listed consulting group generated Q1 2026/27 revenue of €227m, down 2% year on year on both a reported and constant scope, constant currency basis. Its consultant utilisation rate stood at 71%, while the average daily rate fell to €926. Wavestone now expects organic revenue evolution between a 1% decline and low single digit growth, compared with a previous target of low single digit organic growth, and has reduced its recurring operating margin target to between 11% and 13%.
Alongside that reset, Wavestone has completed the acquisition of AI Builders, founded in 2019, for an enterprise value of €19.3m. AI Builders has around 50 consultants and advises large organisations on AI strategy, governance, product management, implementation, and change management. The firm is targeting €10.3m of revenue in 2026, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 15%, and will be consolidated into Wavestone’s accounts from 1 August 2026.
The combination of weaker trading and a targeted AI acquisition is more revealing than either item alone. Wavestone said clients are shifting new investments towards AI projects at the expense of other areas. AI related consulting now represents 22% of the firm’s Q1 revenue, up from 17% across the previous financial year, but that growth has not offset the decline in other activity.
That is a useful corrective to easy claims about AI creating a blanket boom for technology services. Demand is changing shape, but budgets are not expanding equally across every category. Programmes once sold under digital transformation, cloud migration, operating model redesign, or data strategy are being reallocated towards AI, while discretionary consulting work remains exposed to slower decisions and tighter client scrutiny.
Many organisations have moved beyond early generative AI experimentation and are now deciding what should be governed centrally, what should be embedded into business units, and what can safely be automated. That work requires strategy and governance, but it also requires product management, workflow redesign, operating controls, data foundations, and change management. AI Builders’ profile fits that demand more closely than a generic AI advisory shop.
Wavestone’s difficulty is that capability alone does not guarantee capture. The company has acknowledged that it has not fully benefited from the market reallocation towards AI and needs to accelerate its own shift. Even consulting businesses with established technology credentials have to retrain teams, repackage services, build delivery assets, and prove that AI work can replace declining demand elsewhere.
The deal also points towards a consolidation pattern in European professional services. Smaller specialist AI consultancies are attractive because they bring credibility, methods, and client relationships in a field where large consulting brands may have breadth but not always depth. Buyers increasingly want help moving from pilots into implementation, and that requires teams that can speak to legal, product, data, technology, and operational stakeholders at once.
Wavestone now has to turn the acquisition into a broader growth engine rather than a defensive adjustment. AI demand is real, but it is selective. The consultancies that benefit most will be those that connect AI with measurable operating change, governance, and systems integration, without treating artificial intelligence as a rebrand for every existing transformation programme.
