Palantir’s role in British policing is becoming visible through a patchwork of local contracts and regional arrangements, with at least six forces using its technology under agreements collectively valued at £7.8 million and others potentially interacting with the resulting systems indirectly.
The deployments involve technology from Palantir, including its Foundry platform and systems associated with Nectar, an architecture intended to help police organisations analyse and share information across force boundaries. The data involved can include crime records and material extracted from seized devices, placing the software inside operational intelligence work rather than routine office administration.
Lancashire Police acquired Foundry through Softcat for a proof of concept valued at £860,000, with access extended to June 2026, while Leicestershire Police entered an £800,000 agreement in 2024. Bedfordshire Police has operated under a rolling arrangement since 2023, with expenditure approaching £3 million over that period.
The wider picture is harder to establish because British policing relies heavily on regional organised crime units, shared services, specialist teams, and national programmes. A force can contribute data to a regional platform or consume intelligence produced through it without holding an identical Palantir contract of its own.
Regional infrastructure blurs procurement boundaries
That distinction becomes important when responsibility for data, expenditure, and operational decision making is assessed. The organisation paying a supplier is not necessarily the only body whose information enters the platform, while officers elsewhere may rely on analytical results produced from combined records.
East Midlands Special Operations Unit, which works across several forces, said: “We followed appropriate processes to secure services to support the delivery of operational policing.” Even where the procurement itself follows established rules, however, regional deployment can make the full architecture difficult for the public to reconstruct from individual force contracts.

Integrated platforms can reduce duplication and help investigators connect records more quickly, although the same technical capability creates a richer combined picture of individuals than any one database provides alone. Data protection therefore has to follow the practical flow of information, including who can search it, which records can be combined, how access is logged, and how long derived intelligence remains available.
Proofs of concept can become infrastructure
Procurement risk also changes as platforms mature. A limited proof of concept can acquire integrations, trained users, analytical workflows, and connections to operational databases, making later migration more complicated than the original contract value suggests.
Competition then depends on whether another supplier can reproduce not only the software features but also the accumulated integrations and working practices. Data portability, open interfaces, documentation, and exit provisions become essential if a force wants genuine supplier choice after several years of use.
Palantir’s wider position in British public services adds political sensitivity to those questions. The company is already a major supplier to government and the NHS, while critics have challenged its role in public data systems and supporters point to the ability of integrated analytics to improve operational decision making. A separate Metropolitan Police opportunity valued at around £50 million has been paused, while smaller deployments continue elsewhere. That pattern means Palantir’s position in UK policing may not depend on one national procurement at all: regional and local systems can establish an operational footprint gradually, contract by contract.
The resulting governance challenge is similarly distributed. Forces need to explain not simply whether they have bought Palantir software, but what information enters it, which organisations can use the output, how operational decisions are reviewed, and whether the architecture can be changed without losing access to capabilities that have become embedded in everyday policing.
