Uniper is planning a datacentre hub at its Staudinger power plant site in Hesse, placing AI and cloud infrastructure on land once occupied by coal generation.
The German energy company’s plan centres on Großkrotzenburg, where part of the Staudinger site is being redeveloped as the coal-fired plant is demolished. The proposed complex would include datacentre facilities, a battery energy storage system, and a new gas-fired power plant.
Uniper has not disclosed the projected combined compute capacity of the datacentres, and investor talks are still under way. The company is expected to allocate about 459,000 square metres of land on the site to the facilities, while a nearby substation is being expanded by grid operator TenneT.
The location is what makes the plan significant. Datacentre projects used to be discussed mainly through property, fibre access, and customer proximity. AI workloads and cloud growth have made power availability a harder constraint, particularly in mature European markets where grids are congested and planning approval is becoming more contested.
Brownfield energy sites can offer attributes that technology developers increasingly need: industrial land, established power infrastructure, existing grid relationships, and fewer unknowns than a greenfield location waiting years for a connection. For energy companies, compute demand offers a route to reuse strategic sites while exploring long-term power purchase agreements and adjacent infrastructure revenue.
Hesse is already one of Germany’s most mature datacentre markets, helped by Frankfurt’s role as a connectivity and financial hub. Yet the region’s growth is now colliding with political, grid, and land-use pressures. Recent delays and cancellations around other projects show that demand alone is not enough when a facility cannot secure power, local support, or planning confidence.
The Staudinger project also highlights the energy tension inside digital infrastructure. Battery storage can support flexibility, and renewable procurement may form part of future customer contracts, but the inclusion of a new gas-fired plant shows that reliable capacity is still being sought alongside decarbonisation claims. Datacentres need continuous power, and the physical grid must satisfy that demand even when corporate climate strategies are built around annual renewable matching.
Uniper’s wider strategy points in the same direction. The company has identified several power plant sites where datacentres could be built nearby, and it is exploring revenue opportunities with datacentre operators through power purchase agreements. The energy sector is becoming part landlord, part infrastructure partner, and part power supplier to the AI economy.
The Staudinger plan is therefore less a single real estate scheme than a sign of how European compute capacity will be built. The winners will not only be the operators with customers and servers, but the ones able to secure land, electricity, grid reinforcement, and political permission at the same time.
