Vertiv is preparing another expansion of its manufacturing operation in north-west Ireland, where demand for the equipment behind AI and hyperscale computing is translating into factory capacity, engineering work, and hundreds of potential new jobs.
The US-headquartered digital-infrastructure supplier plans to seek permission from Donegal County Council for an additional 7,000 square metres of manufacturing and testing space at its Letterkenny facility. The project could support up to 300 new jobs and is being backed by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.
Vertiv has already hired more than 500 people across its facilities in Ireland and the North West since the beginning of 2026, according to IDA Ireland, and continues to recruit for engineering and operational roles. Its regional footprint also includes Burnfoot in Donegal, Campsie in Derry, a procurement office in Limerick, and sales and service operations in Dublin.
The investment is notable less for the existence of another data-centre supplier expansion than for what Vertiv is making. Its operations cover power management, cooling, testing, and industrialised infrastructure, turning the boom in AI computing into demand for the equipment that sits around the processors themselves.
As companies build clusters of accelerators, the constraint is increasingly the supporting physical system. High-density computing requires power to be distributed reliably, heat to be removed continuously, equipment to be tested before deployment, and installations to be assembled quickly enough for expensive compute capacity not to sit idle. Those requirements create an industrial supply chain extending well beyond semiconductor fabrication.
Vertiv’s proposed Letterkenny extension puts part of that supply chain into an Irish manufacturing context. Public discussion around AI infrastructure often concentrates on hyperscalers, chip designers, and data-centre developers, but equipment companies supplying cooling and electrical systems are becoming an increasingly important destination for capital expenditure.
That is particularly relevant in Ireland, where digital infrastructure is already economically substantial but politically constrained by demands on the electricity system. Ireland’s cloud expansion has made data-centre electricity consumption part of the country’s infrastructure arithmetic, while the wider European AI build-out is forcing developers to think as carefully about energy and cooling as computing hardware.
The Letterkenny investment sits at a different point in that system. Rather than announcing another data-centre campus consuming Irish power, Vertiv is expanding the industrial capacity used to equip facilities around the world. Ireland can therefore capture more of the AI infrastructure supply chain without every associated job depending on the operation of domestic data-centre capacity.
The employment mix is also notable. Vertiv said the expansion would deepen expertise across power, cooling, manufacturing, and engineering, categories where demand is being shaped by the higher rack densities associated with AI computing. These are not simply construction roles attached to a single campus; manufacturing and testing operations can become part of a longer-lived technology supply chain if demand persists.
Planning approval remains necessary before the extension can proceed, while recruitment at the scale already undertaken this year places pressure on the regional pool of engineers, technicians, and skilled manufacturing workers. Data-centre investment is also cyclical, even when current AI demand makes the market appear structurally undersupplied.
The speed of hiring nevertheless provides a tangible measure of the infrastructure cycle. Adding more than 500 employees since January and proposing capacity for another 300 roles in one region is materially different from an AI investment announcement expressed solely as future computing capacity or capital expenditure.
It also broadens the way economic value from AI is measured. The model may be developed elsewhere and the eventual data centre may operate in another country, yet demand still flows through factories making cooling systems, power equipment, modular infrastructure, and the other components needed to keep high-density computing online.
For Irish industrial policy, that creates a route to capture technology investment through manufacturing and engineering as well as cloud campuses and multinational headquarters. IDA Ireland’s support reflects that broader proposition, particularly in a region outside Dublin where large-scale technology employment can have a different local economic effect.
Vertiv’s planning application will determine the immediate next step, but the industrial direction is already visible. AI infrastructure spending is creating demand well beyond GPUs and data-centre real estate, and part of that capital is now reaching the factories producing the power and cooling systems required to make dense computing viable.
